We attended an exceptionally varied Elderhostel in Arkansas and Missouri. Traveling by bus we spent a few days in each of four very different areas learning about the history of the particular area and enjoying the highlights of each location. Our first two stops were at Hot Springs and Eureka Springs.

While in Hot Springs, Arkansas, we were given a tour of the Fordyce Bathhouse. In the late 1800's and early 1900's wealthy people came here for healing baths and medical treatment and to socialize. There were separate sections for men and women. These pictures were taken in the very opulent men's. section with its stained glass ceiling , beautiful fountain, and marble walls. The bathhouse is not used anymore but is part of the National Park Service. Baths are available in newly refurbished hotels. We took one of the "healing" baths in a local hotel.

As a special treat we were taken to visit the Garvan Woodland Gardens which was a great place for taking pictures.

Our next stop was Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This is an old Victorian town built on the steep sides of a ravine. People came here for the healing springs also but the springs are no longer used because of pollution. We visited one large old hotel but the town mostly has historic Victorian houses which are now used as Bed and Breakfasts.

The historic Crescent Hotel with its beautiful gardens is still in use. From the gardens one can see an unusual church and some of the countryside.

The old downtown area of Eureka Springs is also interesting. While there we were able to visit an early bank that is still in use.

As a special treat we were taken to visit the Thorncrown Chapel which has received numerous awards for its outstanding architecture.
