FIVE  DAYS IN MOBILE  ALABAMA

In January 2006 we attended an Elderhostel in Mobile, Alabama. It was a 3 day Elderhostel devoted to very interesting lectures about the Dead Sea Scrolls and the best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code. We also had a very interesting lecturer explaining the transitions of religious architecture through the ages. As a part of this presentation we were taken to view two churches and a synagogue in Mobile. We decided to stay two extra days in Mobile and do some sightseeing in the area. On one day we visited the World War II battleship   Alabama and on the other day we visited the Bellingrath Gardens.

The gardens were beautiful, even in January.

We were taken inside the Bellingrath home with its magnificent antiques. It was completed in 1935 and used salvaged materials from mid-19th century Mobile structures in its construction. The Bellingraph fortune was acquired through a franchise from  the Coca Cola company for the Mobile area. Sales of the popular drink must have been phenomenal then because its price was a mere 5 cents.

We were able to tour the USS Alabama and also photograph some of the World War II airplanes at the site.

Although the Elderhostel consisted mainly of very interesting lectures we were taken by bus into Mobile to visit The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Christ Church Cathedral, and the Ahavas Chesed Synagogue. The stained glass was really beautiful.
