In October 2007
we decided to drive south along
the Natchez Trace Parkway to
visit THE WALL that we had heard
so much about. It is being built
by Tom Hendricks to honor one of
his ancestors - an exceptional
Native American woman of the
Yuchi Tribe. She was still a
young girl when she was sent by
the U.S. Government to Oklahoma
along with the other Native
Americans as the government
sought to clear the area of all
the "Indians" living there, She
slipped away from the
reservation and returned, alone,
and on foot, to her homeland in
Northwest Alabama. She later
married a white settler and
because of her knowledge of the
medicinal herbs and other native
plants was able to heal many of
the people who came to her for
help.
THE WALL is the largest
unmortared wall in the United
States, the largest memorial to
an "American Indian Woman", and
possibly the largest memorial to
a woman. The wall contains more
than six and a half million
pounds of stone and is larger
than five football fields.
It is located at Threets
Crossroads, in Alabama, just off
the Natchez Trace Parkway. It is
in a wooded area and we found it
impossible to get any pictures
that displayed the enormity of
it. |
