ALL ABOARD THE TRAIN

|
| We attended an Elderhostel that was devoted to
the history of some of the famous trains of New England. We were able to
ride aboard a few of these trains that had been reconditioned and are used
now as tourist attractions and/or still used for transportation. Our
first ride was on the Cape Cod Central Railroad. From Cape Cod we
were taken by bus to New Hampshire to board the Lake Winnipesaukee "hobo"
Railroad for lunch and a ride along the lake. The next train we
visited , The Flying Yankee" was still being reconditioned, but we were
able to sit inside one of the cars that had been returned to its beautiful
original state. We were given the history of the Conway Notch Train before
taking the trip on that train through the "Notch". While in New Hampshire
our most exciting train ride was on the Cog Railway to the top of Mount
Washington. Our train "safari" ended with a trip aboard the Essex Steam
Train followed by a ride aboard a riverboat. |

The Flying Yankee was built in 1935. There were only two other
trains built similarly. It is stainless steel, with a diesel-electric
engine. The interior was plush, with an art deco theme. After 1957 it
was no longer in use but remained as a display, where it was
vandalized and left to deteriorate. Restoration was started in 1997
and is ongoing. |
