ELDERSHOSTEL  IN  IRELAND

We spent an interesting and exciting two weeks at an Elderhostel in the northwestern part of the Republic of Ireland. The emphasis was on Irish music and dancing but we were also treated to excursions into the Irish countryside. We were able to photograph so many interesting aspects of Irish life that I have prepared four separate web pages of our favorite photographs. The first page will be devoted to the Irish landscape, both in the country and in the cities we visited. The second will feature castles and old buildings. The third will be devoted to music and dance, and the last page will feature personal pictures that do not fit into the other three categories.

We were taken by bus for a day trip into Northern Island where we went by boat to Devenish Island where we visited the remains of an ancient monastery. The monastery of St. Molaise was founded in the 6th century. The round tower was added in the 12th century. That is a Celtic Cross in the foreground.

The Burren is a rocky limestone area off the western coast of Ireland. It has been occupied for thousands of years. The rock edifice in the picture above is a portal tomb constructed by inhabitants around 3800 B.C. The are is no longer fertile due to the washing away of the topsoil.
