HISTORIC  SAVANNAH GEORGIA

We have begun to enjoy attending Elderhostels. We get to meet many interesting people, attend informative lectures, and visit places that we may have visited before but with more understanding and appreciation for what these places have to offer.

The congregation of the historic synagogue, Mickve Israel, hosted our trip to Savannah. Temple Mickve Israel was built in the mid 1800's and is one of a very few Neo-Gothic Synagogues in existence. The congregation was founded in 1733, just a few months after James Ogelthorpe established the Georgia colony.

During our visit we were able to visit many of the beautiful squares and parks for which the city is noted. Reconstruction of  magnificent old buildings was begun in the 1950's and we have photographed several of them. We also visited the very famous and beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery,
